Homegrown Charity Goes Nationwide
In 1986, former Fibre CEO and president, Larry Hoff, teamed up with Roger Michaelis of IQ Credit Union and other credit union leaders to found Credit Unions for Kids. The charity program is focused on fundraising for OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital and supporting the treatment of ill children in southwest Washington and Oregon. A decade later, Credit Unions for Kids became the credit union movement’s charity of choice to support Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals across the country. The once small Pacific Northwest program has since grown into a network of credit unions from across the United States who fundraise on behalf of 170 Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. In fact, credit unions are the 3rd largest sponsors of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.
Every Donation Makes a Difference
Since 1996, Credit Unions for Kids has raised over $195 million dollars for their respective Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, and $18 million of that total has directly supported Doernbecher. These funds have been used to establish an endowment for the Chair of the Department of Pediatrics, create endowed professorships in pediatrics with a focus on pediatric research and neonatology, and build the outpatient clinic on the 7th floor of the hospital as well as four additional rooms in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.

A Few Facts About Doernbecher
- No child is turned away from care, regardless of a family’s ability to pay.
- More than 1,000 doctors, nurses, and staff are specially trained in pediatric care to best serve the needs of young patients.
- As part of OHSU, Doernbecher provides the most advanced pediatric treatments available, while continuing further studies to find new cures and treatments.

Beginning in 2006, Hoff and Michaelis channeled their love of motorcycles into an annual Ride & Rock event, which featured a motorcycle run, barbecue, and concert. In recent years, we’ve celebrated Doernbecher Days in the fall in all of our locations, offering fundraising items for sale to our members. We also conduct multiple small scale fundraisers throughout the year to benefit the program. From planning motorcycle rides to selling Credit Unions for Kids piggy banks, we’re committed to supporting Doernbecher’s lifesaving and life changing services to local children and their families. Since 2010, we’ve raised over $370,000 from our various Credit Unions for Kids fundraisers and every penny has supported Doernbecher.

To alleviate the financial stress of travel and hotel costs, the guest house offers private, relaxing spaces for families to stay free of charge while their children undergo treatment. Credit Unions for Kids played an integral role in supporting the development of the Rood Family Pavilion by contributing $5 million to its construction. For members living within our service areas, Doernbecher is the top recommended medical facility for pediatric care. Nearly 21,000 visits in 2019 were for patients who live within the seven Washington and Oregon counties we serve, which all require travel to the Portland metro area. The guest house is now a cost-free haven for our local families who must travel to be with their children during treatment. We’re honored to be part of the Rood Family Pavilion project and we believe it will bring peace and comfort to countless families in the years to come.
